Linley's purple hazeAnd the pool terrace is girded with wrought iron made by a local craftsman. The next part of the project will be the restoration of the estate’s original 18th-century farmhouse, but in the meantime it is the land that occupies Linley’s French leave. Most of his Provençal domain is wooded, the occasional tree bearing the traditional metal chasse gardée (no hunting) signs, but Linley allows the locals to shoot as the previous owners did, as a “good neighbour policy”. It pays to follow local custom, he has found, making a judicious switch to a sandy boules pitch after the English croquet lawn was “snuffled up by wild boar”. The fauna are not the only problem. “Being a countryman in France is an entirely different prospect to being a countryman in England. One becomes obsessed by rain down here. One of our fields is called Three Wells, but there’s about enough water to wash a baby, and that’s it.” The water shortage this summer — the third season of drought in a row — is of particular concern to Linley. For having learnt, after the croquet episode, “not to be too bloody clever, and to grow things in harmony with the landscape”, he joined forces with the local mayor, Alain Cassan, who, with his son Benoît, is helping Linley get his land into ultimate harmony with the landscape. Lavender fields — a purple summer blur when viewed from one angle, shifting to neatly domed rows abuzz with bees when you change your point of view — have been an essential part of the Provençal scene since well before the Impressionists and Van Gogh committed the sight to canvas. read more. Grey called to the race fan from a second-story window. "I can't get out of my driveway.""You have plenty of room there," the woman replied."If I don't, a tow truck will make sure I have plenty of room to get out my car," Grey shot back. After shouting a series of expletives, the race fan parked elsewhere.Grey's neighbor Phyllis Crocker once looked out her window and saw a woman sunbathing on her lawn. Phyllis, 70, and her husband, Allan, 71, enjoy living near the track, but occasionally people litter their yard with empty beverage bottles, as if their lawn were a trash receptacle.Saratoga Race Course "is a wonderful part of Saratoga's history," said Peg Schalit, Foye's daughter, who was raised here. "It's not that we don't love it in a way, but it makes life difficult."The Greys and Crockers live on the same city block as pop star and actor David Cassidy, NYRA president/CEO Charles Hayward and several thoroughbred owners.
